Fresh from the Field: The Markets Are Open

There’s nothing quite like that first Saturday in May when the markets fully come alive. For me, it’s not just about the vegetables — it’s about the community energy (and usually a good donut). Here’s where I’ll be shopping this season.

Supermarket produce has its place, but if you want to taste what West Michigan is actually made of, you need to hit the stalls. Michigan is one of the most agriculturally diverse states in the nation — and May is the kickoff.

Grand Rapids
The granddaddy of them all. Open year-round, but the “main season” energy really shows up in May.
What to grab in May: asparagus, rhubarb, early greens, and hanging baskets.
Pro tip: Wednesday evenings (or off-peak hours) can be a great way to avoid the Saturday crush.
Holland
Located downtown near 8th Street — arguably one of the most scenic markets in the state. Often you’ll catch street performers, food trucks, and a real festival feel.
The vibe: festive and family-friendly — a great “grab lunch while you shop” spot.
Wyoming
Held at the UM Health-West Village campus. Smaller than Fulton, but really curated — lots of healthy, local, “good stuff.”
Bonus: they often share recipes and seasonal ideas tied to what’s in-season that week.
Tim’s Final Thought
If you see Michigan Asparagus on a sign, buy it. Peak sweetness is a short window — roughly a day or so once it’s picked — and it’s arguably the best vegetable grown in our state. Enjoy the harvest.
Market Shopping Like a Pro
Bring a tote, bring small bills, and don’t be afraid to ask the farmer what’s best today. If you’re buying greens, a small cooler in the car is a game changer once the temps rise.
