My freezer is about to get full. We live in the heart of blueberry country — West Michigan produces millions of pounds every summer. It’s cheap, healthy, and honestly one of the best low-key family traditions you can have.

Peak season typically runs late July through mid-August, depending on weather. Some farms open earlier or stay open later — always check farm pages before you drive.

The Gold Standard
Beautiful farm market, huge operation, and incredibly consistent berries. This is usually the first place people recommend for a reason.
Do not leave without: Blueberry donuts. Seriously.
Massive Fields / Worth the Drive
Large commercial-scale fields. If closer farms are picked over, this is your move. Usually great berry variety and heavy production.
North GR Favorite
Great local feel, friendly staff, and very solid berry quality. Perfect option if you don’t want to drive toward the lakeshore.
Southwest Michigan Heavy Hitter
One of the largest blueberry producers in the region. If you’re making a lakeshore day trip anyway, this is a great stop.
Local / Low Crowds Option
Smaller operation, often quieter, and great if you want a relaxed picking experience.
U-Pick Strategy (This Saves You Time & Frustration)
• Go early morning if possible — cooler and berries are firmer
• Bring cash just in case (some farms still prefer it)
• Wear shoes you don’t mind staining
• Bring more containers than you think you need
Tim’s Final Thought
Don’t wash berries until you’re ready to eat them. If you freeze them wet, they get mushy. Freeze them dry, then wash when you pull them out in January.
